Homemade Mild Taco Seasoning Recipe

This homemade mild taco seasoning is my go-to alternative to store-bought packets. It’s quick to mix, packed with bold flavor, and made with simple pantry spices—perfect for tacos, bowls, and easy weeknight meals.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ¼ tsp crushed red chili flakes
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper

Method
 

  1. In a small bowl, combine the chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, oregano, smoked paprika, crushed red chili flakes, salt, and pepper.
  2. Whisk or stir until everything is evenly mixed.
  3. Use immediately, or store in an airtight container or spice jar for up to 6 months.
  4. Use about 2 tablespoons of seasoning per pound of meat (or to taste) whenever taco night calls!

Notes

  • Use fresh spices! Older spices lose potency over time, so fresher spices mean bolder flavor. If your chili powder has been sitting around for years, it might be time for a refresh.
  • Adjust to taste. This seasoning is mild by design, but feel free to tweak it. Add more chili flakes for heat or even a dash of cayenne pepper!
  • Double or triple the recipe and keep it on hand for quick meals. Future-you will be very thankful on busy weeknights!
